Week Four: Winter Break

Image
Hi readers! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break! Welcome back to my blog. In today's post, I'm going to catch you guys up on my shopping decisions over break. On Black Friday, I went back to ALLSAINTS (which if you haven't guessed is probably my favorite label/brand to shop at because their clothes match my current style which is minimalistic in a stylish way). There, I purchased a blanket scarf that basically wraps around my entire torso and hangs to my knees. The fabric description on the scarf lists the scarf to be made with 100% wool. The source of this is probably from sheep, but could've also possibly come from alpacas or llamas! To acquire wool, farmers use a method call shearing, which is a harmless process. When handled with gentle care, the actual sheering process is completely safe for sheep. Think of it as the sheep, alpaca or llama equivalent of a human shaving their head. Shearing of sheep is also important, as thick wool coats can imp...

Week Three: Leather!

This past week, I found a new love! I finally bought a leather jacket! After reflecting on ordering, the of shipping from UPS trucks and other delivery companies contributing to carbon emissions, I decided to purchase in store. I took the light rail downtown which in itself was more sustainable than driving. The light rail is electrically powered, and do not depend on fuel or gases to power, which therefore wouldn't contribute to carbon admissions. This action was more sustainable than taking the bus or driving. Although this doesn't directly connect to my project, it's another example of how minor actions can help us limit our ecological footprint. While downtown, I bought a leather jacket from, once again, ALLSAINTS. This jacket, which according to the fabrics and care tab on the ALLSAINTS website , is created with 100% soft lamb leather. Now there is an interesting trade-off from this decision. Lamb leather, obviously, comes from the skins of lambs. When the lambs ...

Week Two - Zero Purchases

Reflection on the 2nd week - Describe (IN DETAIL) how your 2nd week went with your behavior to reduce your environmental impact? - What did you do? How did you do it? How often did you do it? Calculate the impact of your behavior change. How many resources (water, trees, carbon, greenhouse gases, food, plastic, etc.) do you save by doing this behavior daily? Weekly? Monthly? Yearly? How many resources will you save after 30 days? What if everyone at school did my behavior? In Seattle? In the World? How much of these resources would be saved? What is your perspective on the amount of resources your action has saved and will save. Did the amount surprise you? Why or why not? Considers where this data/information came from. Is it reliable? What are the gaps or limitations to this data? * Cog Skill: Interpreting Data/Info References: *Cog Skill: Selecting Relevant Sources Include citations in one of two ways: 1) In-text 2) Footnotes During the second week of this proj...

Week One: AllSaints Button Down

Reflection on the 1st week Describe (IN DETAIL) how your first week went with your behavior to reduce your environmental impact? What did you do? How did you do it? How often Why is the conservation behavior good for the environment? (Justify your choice!) Identify barriers: what has prevented you from undertaking this behavior to reduce your environmental impact in the past? What needs to change to make this behavior to reduce your environmental impact achievable for the next 30 days? Can you make that change yourself or do you need outside help? Explore incentives: are there internal or external incentives that would help motivate you to make the change? References: *Cog Skill: SELECTING RELEVANT RESOURCES Include citations in one of two ways: In-text Footnotes The first week of my project went moderately well. I have only made one new purchase in the past week, a button-down shirt from AllSaints, a British label headqu...
